„A Shared Understanding of What Plastic Can Do“

26.08.2026

As Executive Director of the Plastic is Fantastic Association, Dominic Fiel explains the association's goals and the value it creates for its members in this yes or no interview. Under the motto "Powerful Material. Global Voice." the association envisions a future in which plastics are recognized by the public, based on facts, as an indispensable material for modern civilization.

The Network: The Plastic is Fantastic Association

Why does the plastics industry need platforms like the PiFA today?

Because the challenges are too great and the debate too complex for individual companies to tackle alone. The industry needs platforms that consolidate facts, connect stakeholders, and create a credible collective voice. PiFA is home to all plastics and the entire value chain. It is about creating a shared understanding of the vital role plastics play in our lives.

Which future vision of plastic do you connect with the PiFA?

A future in which plastic is not generally condemned, but intelligently evaluated. Plastics belong wherever they make ecological, economic, and societal sense. They should be used with minimal resource consumption and within fully circular systems. Our vision is for the material to be designed responsibly, used wisely, and consistently managed within circular economies.

What would PiFA need to do to bring about a lasting change in the public debate on plastics?

PiFA must build trust through transparency, science and open communication. If we differentiate the discussion and clarify the role of plastic as a modern sustainability solution, much is achieved. We must make its positive applications visible, such as in medicine, in safe packaging or in mobility, energy and digitalization.

What can a platform like PiFA achieve that individual companies cannot achieve alone?

The PiFA bundles perspectives beyond individual interests. It connects together manufacturers, recyclers, brands and science. This creates a comprehensive picture that companies cannot convey alone. We also want to show that plastic is not just a product, but a future focused innovation system.

How does the PiFA protect the industry from the accusation of collective greenwashing?

By distinguishing between issues rather than glossing over them. Greenwashing occurs when problems are swept under the rug or promises cannot be substantiated. The PiFA relies on facts, transparency and comprehensible examples. We name advantages, but demand closed cycles and measurable solutions. Credibility needs no perfect messages, but honesty, evidence and concrete progress.

The Mission: What drives the Plastic is Fantastic Association

In your opinion, what is the most important reason for PiFA’s existence?

The discussion about plastic must be based on objectivity and depth. Today, it is often driven by emotion and broad generalizations. The PiFA objectifies this debate and highlights where the material creates real benefit. Because fact is: Modern life and technological progress cannot function without plastics.

Which discussion about plastic does the PiFA want to change?

We want to move away from "Plastics: yes or no?" towards: “How do we use it responsibly, efficiently and within a circular economy?” The material is not the problem. Problems arise with incorrect use or careless disposal. The essential role of plastics in modern lightweight construction or future oriented energy technologies is often overlooked by the public.

If the PiFA were to formulate a societal promise regarding plastic – what would it be?

Our promise reads: We advocate for an honest, solution-oriented exchange. The goal is to use materials more intelligently, close material loops and use advantages responsibly. This way, this material becomes the safe foundation for a sustainable future.

Which benefit of your work is most important for members and the public?

For members we offer visibility, orientation and a unified voice in a complex debate. We provide the public with understandable information. The greatest benefit: We build bridges between industry, science, media, politics and society. The PiFA unites all relevant perspectives from the raw material through processing to a functioning circular economy.

What would be missing in the debate about plastic if the PiFA did not exist?

Without PiFA, there would be no independent platform that brings together advantages, challenges and solutions in a fact-based manner. The PiFA makes visible what individual companies cannot. Most importantly, there would be no unified voice explaining that plastics are a fundamental building block of our infrastructure, rather than reducing them to packaging or waste.

Final Question: What should people take away from this discussion about plastic?

Plastic is neither inherently good nor bad. Decisive is the path from production through use to recycling. The PiFA stands for fact-based dialogue: Properly used, plastics are the key for a sustainable future. Our goal remains a balanced perspective that acknowledges both the challenges we must address and the benefits plastics provide.
